welcome to your successful local repair cafe

During the October 16, 2018 meeting of the Sustainable Black Diamond Advisory Committee I had presented the concept of creating and having an ongoing Repair Cafe for the local community. It was received well and the committee worked hard on the initiative.

As the only longest running locally operated cafe we have put on an average 6 cafes per year for the past five years. During that time the students from Oilfields High School have taken part in every cafe and its been a joy having them involved.

The students will from this next cafe on (Nov. 4, 2023), will now be responsible for the running of the Cafe, along with a few of us who have also been on board since the beginning. We will be working alongside the students, mentoring and teaching them how to do repairs and develop skills in using tools, and working with many different people in the community.

We will be working toward creating as many opportunities as possible to for students to take part in the day to day functioning of their community.

The students are already taking part in the running of their vertical growing initiative, a 40 foot seacan outfitted with a vertical growing system, to grow food 365 days a year for the local community. I will be including a more detailed article in one of the next posts.

Hats off to the students and wish them well. We can also be very proud of the effort they put into these projects.
